Prepare Your Bird Houses
January 27, 2011

While we are still in the throes of winter it takes a real imagination to look ahead to spring activities. But now is the perfect time to clean out your birdhouses in preparation for mating season this year. Fall is actually the best time for this task but many people, myself included, leave the nests in place so that other birds can use them as a shelter from the harsh winter weather.

Before you know it, birds will begin nesting this spring and it is vital to provide a clean house. Remove all old nesting material and discard into the trash. If your bird houses are extremely soiled, you should clean them with a mixture of soap and water or a light bleach and water mix. Use a stiff brush to clean the inside and outside of each house. Then rinse well with clear water and allow to dry thoroughly in the sun before remounting.

If you have not provided housing for birds before, plan now on which birds you would like to attract and learn about the types of houses needed. Please stop by our garden department and talk to an expert who will explain everything you need to know about this important component of your backyard habitat.
